While Latson is well on her way to achieving her goals, her journey has been a complicated one. The first obstacle Latson faced was pregnancy. Due to complications and the responsibilities of being a single mother, she took a break from school. 鈥淟ife has its way of throwing curve balls at you,鈥 reflected Latson. Life seemed to have other plans for Latson. The more time passed, the more her dreams began to fade.

Prior to moving back to Shreveport, where she was raised, La鈥橠ereka McCray was living in Sacramento, California working as a hairstylist. Upon her return to Shreveport, she decided to pursue a new career path knowing that she wanted to create a life for her and her child that would provide stability and a consistent income. Once enrolled at SUSLA, McCray felt slightly out of place due to being older than most of the students she saw on campus.

Plenty of people go back to school to get a promotion or increase their salaries, but Yolonda Moore had more personal reasons. After having a thriving radio career for more than 30 years, she felt things were left unfinished. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 go back because I had to; I wanted to get my degree,鈥 stated Yolonda.

Emmanuel C. Akintade did not approach the podium to deliver farewell remarks to the graduating class of Spring 2020. Instead, as one of the SUSLA Spring 2020 valedictorians, he offered words of encouragement to his classmates through the virtual graduation ceremony.
